Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1866-1949) was born
in Russian Armenia to a Greek father
and an Armenian mother. Searching from
Afghanistan to Tibet and India, from
Turkey to Africa, he came in contact
with teachings and remote monasteries
only known
through legends to the outside world. Throughout
this time, striving to realize his wish for truth,
Gurdjieff worked in a variety of trades
to support his quest. He struggled through numerous
difficulties including several wars including the
Russian Revolution, WWI, and WWII.
Gurdjieff founded the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man in Fontainebleau-Avon, France and in 1924 he made the first of several visits to the U.S. He continued his work until his death in 1949. Today there are Gurdjieff organizations in major cities around the world as well as many smaller study groups.
